1 Pauline Oliveros 60x60 Solo

Pauline Oliveros, composer, performer and humanitarian is an important pioneer in American Music. Acclaimed internationally, for five decades she has explored sound -- forging new ground for herself and others. Through improvisation, electronic music, ritual, teaching and meditation she has created a body of work with such breadth of vision that it profoundly effects those who experience it and eludes many who try to write about it. "On some level, music, sound consciousness and religion are all one, and she would seem to be very close to that level." John Rockwell Oliveros has been honored with awards, grants and concerts internationally. Whether performing at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., in an underground cavern, or in the studios of West German Radio, Oliveros' commitment to interaction with the moment is unchanged. She can make the sound of a sweeping siren into another instrument of the ensemble.

2 Kari Besharse Seeping Peace

Kari Besharse is a composer of acoustic and electroacoustic music, a guitarist, an educator, a sci-fi nut, and an outdoors enthusiast. Her works, which incorporate sounds from acoustic instruments, found objects, the natural world, and the computer are often generated from a group of sonic objects or material archetypes that undergo processes of rupture, degradation, alternation, and expansion. Recent projects include Electric Monster and the Invasion of the B.S.O.s for laptop ensemble and B.S.O. soloists and Luminous Flux for saxophone, bassoon, violin, viola, and cello, which premiered at the Etchings Festival in Auvillar, France in July.

Seeping Peace is a short electroacoustic work that uses samples from my string quartet Seeping Calm. The two pieces are related in mood as well, reflecting how tranquility gradually seeps away no matter how hard we struggle to keep a centered frame of mind.

3 Daria Semegen Bargello

Daria Semegen is a composer of instrumental, vocal and electronic music. As a recognized authority on electronic music composition, she has been the subject of many articles and several dissertations including A. E. Hinkle-Turner's doctoral dissertation "Daria Semegen: A Study of the Composer's Life", Work and Music (University of Illinois-Urbana). Semegen's writings on creative process, esthetics and pedagogy have been published in the U.S. and abroad. She studied at the Eastman School of Music, in mixed-media workshops at the Rochester Institute of Technology, at Yale and Columbia Universities and in Warsaw, Poland as a Fulbright fellow. She taught at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center from 1971-1975 and was a sound engineer at the Collection of World Music (Columbia University) working with field recordings of native musics from many continents. Her awards include six National Endowment for the Arts grants, two BMI awards, two awards from Yale University, a National Chamber Music Competition prize, an ISCM International Electronic Music Competition prize; fellowships from Yaddo, MacDowell Colony, Tanglewood and Chautauqua; a Pennsylvania Institute for the Arts & Humanistic Studies award; and the 1994 Alumni Achievement Award from Eastman School of Music. Prof. Semegen was the first woman awarded a McKim Commission from the Library of Congress.

4 Susan Ann Brewster freerunner

Susan Brewster is a composer and multi-instrumentalist born in America in the state of Indiana, raised in Wisconsin now living and working in London, England. Having studied piano from a young age she was introduced to a number of musical traditions including classical, folk, dixieland, barbershop and ragtime. She began composing as a teenager and at 19 performed professionally in a country western band. She continued with music while studying at University of Wisconsin and in her early 20s relocated to New York City where she performed her own songs in folk clubs around Greenwich Village. Some of her songs were recorded on compilation albums which are now part of the Smithsonian permanent collection. She became involved in theatre while working on a New York City street theatre tour with Theatre for the New City. She continued to pursue music and drama after moving to London where she has composed for fringe theatre and short films. In 1996 she was included in the International Who's Who in Music 15th Edition. She has an interest in inventing instruments, scales and musical theory and in music as a story telling medium. She has a view to have works performed by experimental ensembles incorporating elements of installation art, dance and theatre.

"Freerunning is the art of expressing yourself in your environment with no limitations" a quote by Sebastien Foucan. I love the philosophy of freerunning and the idea of following your own way. I didn't start out with a freerunner in mind but the philosophy is in tune. A freerunner sprung out of the track and it just made perfect sense.

5 Alex Shapiro Just a Minute of Your Time

"Consider this a Public Service Announcement for all of us who, like the proverbial frog in a pot of water that's slowly coming to a boil, could benefit from a wake-up call before it's too late. Play this loud. And pay attention. "

6 Margaret Hosmer Noble Health Care Protests

"You recently purchased a product that will kill you. You are a valuable consumer. "

8 Molly Gene Crain Clipping is Unacceptable

Molly Crain is a sophomore at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky who is currently minoring in music. As far as musical performance goes, she works mainly in vocal performance. However, through her minor she was able to take an Intro to Music Technology class with Timothy Polashek, who gave her the skills to compose "Clipping is Unacceptable". She's always been interested in pop/electronica-dance music and various kinds of mash-ups. When composing, she only hopes to make music like those she listens to (Girl Talk, Telepopmusik, Chromeo, Crystal Castles, Eric Prydz, Discovery, Daft Punk...etc).

To create her musical track, she recorded audio from within the classroom as well as the outdoors, and elaborated on the reoccurring phrases that she found within the recording. It was a really great experience and the theme that stood out to me the most was "Clipping is Unacceptable" in that it was repeated by both my professor, myself, and my friends that I did my field recordings with.

10 Julia Norton Missing My Mother's Garden

Originally from the U.K., Julia currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she teaches voice and composes vocal music for live theatre and solo voices. She draws her inspiration from the emotional heart of a subject and uses extended vocal technique to seek out the edges of discomfort, irreverence and harmony. In using her voice as a compositional instrument she has finally found the vocal freedom she always craved. Her album Lullaby Island won a Parents Choice award in 2007.

Missing My Mother's Garden was recorded when I was feeling sentimental and bluesy.

11 Rose Bolton Shoreditch Distant Memory

Sonic Landscapist Rose Bolton creates music for speakers, headphones, films, and concerts. She has a Masters Degree in Composition from McGill University in Montreal. "dailybell in an ongoing practice of observation of the sun every time it crosses the horizon and to sharing the awareness of that moment with others. This morning, I brought this one little bell outside to greet the day. There's something about the sound of this particular bell that draws attention to other sounds in the environment. Especially to one bird in particular. This bell and that bird connected this morning through the air, and the honest clarity of that connection was a revelation. For a brief moment, there was no me. No bird. No bell. There was only a quiet, simple awareness of the fabric of this world."

She is an Emerita Professor at Vassar College.

"One of the biggest discoveries to influence my later work happened when I simply set up a microphone at the window and recorded the sound environment ... I started to listen to the sounds around me like one great composition." This excerpt is from her new sound installation, 'A Sound Map of the Danube'. - Annea Lockwood

14 Lynn Job Lily

Requested for a 2004 UNT collection of new works using bells to memorialize late Colombian composer Nicolas Useche & raise money for his widow and young son; Job's "Lily" captures the spirit of Useche's bright, happy personality and evokes his homeland keeping bells as foreground instrumentation. Without using actual Colombian folk instruments, Job succeeds in this sonic portrait by blending ocean waves, nightingale song, an Indian percussion ensemble, and custom midi instruments.

15 Alice Shields Zhaojun

Alice Shields received her doctorate from Columbia University and served as Associate Director of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center and Director of Development of the Columbia Computer Music Center. Known for her multi-cultural, multi-language operas and electronic music, her operas include Apocalypse (New World Records, 1994), Mass for the Dead, and Shaman (American Chamber Opera Co. 1992, 1987). Scenes from her opera Criseyde (2010) were performed by the New York City Opera at VOX 2008, and reviewed by the New York Times as "...a rare chance to hear Middle English sung... The melodic development and ornamentation of the intense, richly scored work reflect Ms. Shields' lengthy study of classical Indian raga. For information on Shields’ career, see www.aliceshields.com.

“Zhaojun - A Woman of Peace" (2011) is a 1-act feminist chamber opera being created for concert performances. The libretto by Shields is in English with quotes in Chinese from Chinese poetry and, as in this excerpt, from Chinese folk-song. Written for mezzo-soprano, viola with signal processing, flute, pipa (Chinese lute) and computer music, the 30-minute work explores the life of Wang Zhaojun, one of the four beauties of ancient China. Zhaojun tells her own story and relays her feelings about what actually happened to her when she supposedly created peace between China and the Huns during the Han Dynasty (48-33 BC). The opera interweaves music, text and drama from Chinese and Western opera and folksong traditions.

She currently resides in California and is pursuing her Bachelors degree in Music Composition under Dr. Kenneth Froelich.

“Rogue Souls” is an electronic-art-piece about wandering souls that are trapped on earth unable to escape to heaven or hell. These souls are neither happy nor sad. They simply just roam and travel around the world while watching the living. A reoccurring theme throughout the piece is female choir voices which represent the souls calling out to each other. I also chose to use female choir voices for the 60x60's Athena Mix which will be composed of 60 composition pieces by 60 female composers.

La Barbara is composing a new opera exploring the interior dialogue and sounds within the mind, and the flow of the artistic process. http://www.joanlabarbara.com

In quiet moments one finds peace. Lizzie Lizzie (our beautiful Samoyed/Lab whom we adopted at age 4) graced this earth for nearly 15 years and joined our lives for almost 11 of those years. With this work I honor her life and her dignity and try to bring some solace to myself on her passing. Her voice joins mine, mingled with layers of modified bells and sighs. She had a lovely way of taking little breaths and then releasing a deep sigh of peace when she felt totally relaxed and calm. I reflect that gesture in some of my breathwork here, and included her concerned vocalization, which I inadvertently recorded during the development of a different and very difficult piece.

25 Mary Jane Leach Dido in a Minute

"MARY JANE LEACH is a composer/performer whose work reveals a fascination with the physicality of sound, its acoustic properties and how they interact with space. In many of her works Leach creates an other-worldly sound environment using difference, combination, and interference tones; these are tones not actually sounded by the performers, but acoustic phenomena arising from Leach's deft manipulation of intonation and timbral qualities. The result is striking music which has a powerful effect on listeners. "

Dido in a Minute is for synthesizer and prerecorded sound. It is an aural visualization of Dido's Lament.

26 Soressa Gardner Music Box Opera

Soressa Gardner is a vocalist, improviser and electronic music composer who collaborates with authors (Dennis E, Bolen, Evie Christie), dancers (BODAC) visual artists (Birdwise, Ballesteros) and a range of musicians. She holds a music degree from Vancouver Community College. Community involvement, a sense of play, and crossing disciplines are motivating factors in her artistic explorations.

Music Box Opera is inspired by the mysterious Opera Man who has walked the west side streets of Vancouver, BC, Canada for many years generously sharing his operatic voice with the public. It was composed using sounds recorded on a hand-held digital recorder, using samples of Opera Man and of my music box collection.

Ms. Wang joined the music faculty at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in Fall 2008."

"PRELUDE Prelude can be taken as an exercise to explore the possibilities to develop the short samples. In spite of its miniature nature, this piece is intended to achieve a well-maintained balance between the unity and variety in a short time frame. MSP, MetaSynth, and Peak are used to manipulate the sounds of this work."

She has studied computer music at the Computer and Electronic Music Studio of the University of California, Davis. Her works have been broadcast on FM radio in USA, WDR in Germany and waves in Russia.

"Yellow Orchid" was made by the computer program called SYNTAL06 designed by Wayne Slawson that generates music consisting of speech-like computer-synthesized sounds. "Yellow Orchid" depicts the image of uncanny yellow orchid which I saw in an orchid exhibition. In "Yellow Orchid" noises and voiced sounds are used in parallel. Changes of vibrato frequency affect voice parameters and make the transformation of the tone colors throughout the piece.

29 Emilie Payeur Short Study

Electroacoustic composer and visual artist, Émilie Payeur presents musical art forms that are clearly influenced by the psychedelic era of the 60's, surrealism, abstract arts and experimental film. The way she approaches her work, Emilie perceives herself as a sound painter and wants to transpose and adapt visual art and experimental cinema techniques to electroacoustic music. In Fall 2010, she entered Master Degree at the University of Montreal, under the guidance of Robert Normandeau.

Short Study was composed during my Master degree project. I wanted to experiment on duration to see how much it influences the composing process.

"Ann Cantelow studied composition at the University of California at Davis, during a time when John Cage, Larry Austin and Richard Swift were teaching and growing the body of contemporary American music.. "

"A timeless grotto stands by the seaside with a mysterious environment within. Water drips, and soft light glows green and blue. All sounds for this piece are made by theremin, an electronic instrument. Pieces of sound are arranged one by one with software to find new sonorities."

31 Anna I. Rubin Azure

Azure is an electroacoustic work which features plucked tones and atonal clusters. The scale used for the plucked notes is a parabolic scale which I adapted from the work of Sam Hedemann. I used Csound and Metasynth software.

32 Laurie Spiegel Infoswarm

Laurie Spiegel is a New York composer who is increasingly overwhelmed by the speed and density of info in the world, the city, the cybersphere, her own mind ... although maybe even in simpler times long ago life was already so full and rich and that even then it was all more than could be deeply processed.

Information comes at us faster and faster and more and more dense, bits and streams of repetition and new stuff. Our minds flit and strobe between this and that substream, but somehow we still sometimes manage to filter it all down and can focus.

33 Lucrecia Ugena Planta Lucrecia

She is currently student of Composition of Electro -acoustic Media in the Professor Guillermo Pozzati National Institute of Art. At the same time Lucrecia is working on an experimental project as singer and composer.

Her work “Planta” is a result of the dialectical exploration of the synthetic and concrete. The formal axis of the piece is ruled by the timbre transformations obtained through the manipulation of different electronic processes.

36 Motoko Honda Isshun-Ippun

"composer/sound artist Motoko Honda marries classical, jazz, avant-garde and Pacific-Rim textures with 21st-century technology and emerges with musical soundscapes as profound as they are all-encompassing. Whether solo or in collaboration, live or in-studio, a Honda “comprovisation” is sound- and shape-shifting at its most thrilling and immediate. Honda's musical virtuosity, coupled with a firm grasp of the multimedia arts, has taken her to European concert halls and venues worldwide. "

"""Isshun-Ippun"" is an improvisation specifically recorded for the 60x60 project. The acoustic piano is prepared with a stainless steel ruler. The piano strings are plucked, hammered or scratched building up to moments of fury (isshun) for the duration of a minute (Ippun). Live performance with no dubbing or editing. "

Waves as arpeggios, as washes of sound, of acoustic ambience-- this little piece tries to capture the feeling of floating in waves.

39 Kathy McTavish frayed

"I am a composer/free-style cellist. I use chance and generative/organic forms to create everything from sparse, minimalist spaces to dense, orchestral landscapes and perform in venues ranging from streetscapes to concert halls. My work has been used behind spoken word, theater, visual art/sound installations, and film. As a cellist I live in a fretless world - the infinite between. As a composer I write primarily for stringed instruments and found sound and use the harmonic richness - the confluence of pitch and tone possible through friction of bow and fingers pressed firmly or ghostlike against wood and wire."

Compression: 60 seconds. I sketched around this concept and chose a solo cello approach. The cello line is filtered through a stereo effect that I call "graffiti tunnel". The cello line is tripled, offset and placed in the stereo field to create a spatial disorientation - a sound tunnel.

41 Elizabeth Clare Guthrey Dreaming Bell

" I am an international student studying at Soka University of America's liberal arts college. I have focused my education on environmental studies and also have a passion for music and dance. "

The sounds in this music piece originate from a bell, beads and a guitar. The bell is central in the piece, however, the listener transitions in and out from the bell through other sounds. Crunching beads and taps are without resonance and can signify how bells are used to order people's time, which distracts one's attention from a creative space. In contrast, the floating guitar sound represents a dreamy atmosphere in which bells are part of common resonating sounds.

42 La Cosa Preziosa Cow Belles

Originally from the South of Italy and living between Italy and Ireland, soundscape artist La Cosa Preziosa is influenced by her professional theatre background in the approach to contemporary acoustic ecology. Committed to producing original work (aural dreamscapes, soundscapes and experimental organic tracks) by exploring the intersection between the realism of field recording in rare natural environments and the possibilites of dramatic narrative forms.

Cow Belles is a 60 second long dialogue between cow bells field recorded in Italy and the musical sounds of a glockenspiel. Out of the real-life field recording experience and meditation a melody is created and woven into the natural sounds, following the rhythms of the field and building up to a similar crescendo.

44 Sally J. Williams Reminiscence of a China Plate

As a composer, she creates both acoustic and electroacoustic works in a variety of styles, always focussing on the effect that the music will have on the audience. As of May 2011, Williams will hold degrees in Music Performance and Music Composition from Bowling Green State University.

The sounds in Reminiscence of a China Plate were created using recorded samples involving china plates and book pages. The sounds were then processed and layered to create similar variances in density and timbre as would exist in an acoustic work.

Glimmerings was made from processing sounds of sculptor Emilie Brzezinski carving massive tree trunks. The pitch world is an inviting one, with syncopated layerings and registral openings compressed in this one-minute miniature.

The bass clarinet samples and voice on the tape are by Laura Carmichael, and were recorded at the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies at the University of California, Berkeley. "

(LA Times) Tell the Birds, a new CD of her music, will be released by New World Records in spring of 2006.

“My Heart is Trembling” uses a text by one of the founding brothers of Methodism, Charles Wesley, set to one of the myriad tunes it has been sung to over the years, and counterpoised with an electronicized fragment of a medieval Armenian song about trembling. It's a short exploration of how I might want to use Methodist hymns and songs in the Stephen King opera I'm working on.

I recorded these spinning discs using various mike placements ranging from distances of a few inches to 15 feet in a reverberant space, then selected, layered, and mixed several recordings. Jangling burned out tungsten light bulbs close this miniature work. Spatialization is the natural result of mike placement.

59 Vulva Underground Clitorectomy

"Man-hating, bra-burning, dungaree-wearer who would rather die than let a lipstick touch her lips." The identity politics that characterized the gay and lesbian movement of the 70s, 80s and 90s may be firmly passé for today's under-24 set, but that doesn't mean this generation isn't tangled up in its new permutations. The Vulva Underground is a post-post-modern queer collective from Acadia University (Wolfville, NS, Canada) that fuses feminist theory and radical chic ideology with a back beat. "I like to dyke!" never sounded so refreshing! Come out! "
